5.1. Methodological overview

The module consists of three types activities which address three different pedagogic functions. They provide distinct tools to the students because they are based on the following areas of knowledge: scientific method, medical documentation and history of medicine.

The basics of the three areas are presented –either summarized or explained in depth – in the seminars. The lab sessions allow the students to get to know knowledge management, documentation and scientific communication techniques. Various stages of research are covered in Module Tasks conducted by a teacher, who sets the topic and procedures according to his or her field of expertise. The module tasks are to be developed in small groups of students.

5.2. Learning tasks

Lectures. Their goal is to present topics related to history of health, disease and medical assistance, as well as general or theoretical questions related to the scientific method and medical documentation. Audio visual media and the Internet are used to support the explanations. The lesson schedule can be found on each centre’s Moodle website. Thirty one on-hour lessons are taught in Zaragoza, on a three lessons per week basis. Two lessons per week are taught in Huesca.

Lab sessions and computer workshops: Two main types of hands on activities are developed: 1) Observing, quantifying, analysing and valuing scientific of medical media – papers, clinical history records; 2) Getting to know new information and communication technologies (ITC) applied to biomedical research and assistance. Practical exercises are used to guide the sessions, note observations and carry out complementary exercises. They are used by teaches as a mean for evaluating the student’s work.

ADD/Moodle. It represents the teacher’s standard way to provide learning material and notify changes. Students shall use it to submit the Module Tasks reports, attend on-line personal interviews and get feedback on the evaluation results.

Seminars. These activities allow to apply basic concepts acquired in the seminars or the lab sessions. They also allow the student to get to know the basic techniques for historical or documental research working as a team. They are carried out in small groups conducted by a teacher, depending on the topics proposed by each teacher. The Module Tasks Guide –handled by teachers to each team– will define the method to follow. Questions sessions with the leading teacher will always take place in the afternoons, and their time schedule will be confirmed when necessary. The final presentation of the Module Task results shall be always written. Vancouver style is advised for citing.
